As usual, I cannot write about what I cannot see. But what I do see when I arrive on Sundays is a lot of interest in our little game that’s occurring at a regularly high attendance and skill level. I am pleased and proud to see that. It means the state of the league is stronger than it’s ever been. Now let me try to explain to the newer people what that means. You may find yourself on a very good team. Which is awesome but different than your average game. First thing you’ll have to maybe think about is wow, I’m amongst the tall trees that I don’t play with all that often. What is my job on this team? Your job as always is ball don’t hit water. But when you’ve got highly skilled teammates it’s best to not do over on one or try to go for it yourself. Trust your team. Assist. You’re not going to get a lot of touches. So make ‘em count. Mistakes are killers in the big time. Next, be ready to be “that player”. The one the opponents are going to go after on serves and elsewhere. Do the best you can. There’s an old adage from the ancient days of AWVP. Little guy back in servers position can be dangerous. Because that usually means there’s a big front. When you’ve got a big front, keep your serves in, and good things can happen. I dare say that’s what happened in one game today. Down point 9 if memory serves. No one is going to mistake me for a blaster. But I do have different stuff in the pitching repertoire. Angel apparently has a pic of the Kenny face on the moon ball. I’m only pointing that out because I’ve worn that face so many times. I want to thank my team for the opportunity to play. It’s my contention that playing with good players can raise your own game as well. Challenges and opportunities. On that note, I’m probably the oldest living player right now. If I can do it, I bet others can do it too, when the hurly burly’s done, when the battle’s lost and won. I encourage you to give others the chance I was given today. And yes, I do tend to repeat myself, a lot. Because I don’t know who’s new and who’s listening, and it’s been my experience in this league that repetition is the key to absorbing the message. So here we go again: Don’t look at the lineup and conclude an outcome. That’s why we play the games. If you wanna be a baller, you have to make one play at a time, one rally at a time, one game at a time, one series at a time. one day at a time, one season at a time. No way around that progression. But it’s a good progression. For the new players who are learning both the game of volleyball and the ways of water at the same time, which is how I came up. If you dedicate yourself to learning the game, maybe good things can happen. I’m really old. And little. I grieve about my vertical on long summer days and longer winter nights. I’m not very strong. If I can do it, you can do it too: https://youtu.be/XcG71T5Fs6M?si=vBgQGsU0MKdBJqEI |
