Didn't play Saturday, so I got nothing for ya. Sunday games started around 4:30. I arrived in the middle of the second game, and the superteam had already formed. If memory serves it featured Mikey and Scott on the same team with Jess? Thrice various combinations of players tried to defeat them. I think the closest anyone got was 11. Mikey basically fucked Marcellus Wallace in these contests, because he looked like a bitch. Basically unstoppable.
But it was a day of miracles, so Riata implemented with some ease the mix it up and let dry people play way. Becoming civilized at last... The last few times I've had the privilege to play, the games have been wacky streaky. Huge leads swallowed up, daring comebacks mounted, animals bread and slaughtered. Sunday went kind of the same.
I found myself largely against the players I had trained. There were some rotations of personnel (Dub, Beth), but I found myself on a squad with Lloyd, Pat, Monkey sr., Scott, and drunk Riata Steve.
So it got me to thinking. For years I've wanted to put together a Masters squad of the Old Guard worthy of wearing the green jacket by playing sooo many moons. Well, this was pretty much it.
An older team has not been fielded since Dick's denizens beat the handlers at the old folks home.
Gladiators, I salute you. Our shields were heavy, our helmets were stifling, and our targets were far far away. But by the Gods of Ballhalla, we prevailed in 3 out of 4 contests, and almost came back to win that one. Everyone did their part, even drunk Riata Steve. My compliments to Scott, Pat, and Ronin Steve, who did their jobs and then some out there. I will give Lloyd the jolly green giant credit for only taking one play in 3 off. I will give drunk Steve credit for playing one play out of 3.
These were close calls, mind you. One game we had at 1s the easy way and almost blew it, letting the other team get to 13. The game we lost we were down bad but made it to 12, and the last game of the day had to go to 16 to pull out the W. What was really fun were the rallies. It's been a while since we've played with the bouncier orbs vs. rock Mikasas. These new lighter models don't go down easy.
Speaking of down, this is the last weekend at Riata, isn't it? If we don't find another venue for Sept-Oct action, we are facing more down time than usual. So think about it, and make it so.
