This is one of the reasons I haven't posted in, well, forever.

I've only vaguely been informed about what the issues were behind this banning, and I don't know how many times I've suggested that non-ball related topics, if such things exist, should be discussed privately off site.

There was also plenty of "Chief is a poopy head," chatter that didn't result in any bannings.

Back when the Argosy was still open, there was another rule, "Don't f--k with the residents." Many of us are on foreign territory up at Riata, where we will need The Lip's participation and support to keep playing.

So, my recommendation would be to let it go, reinstate The Lip, and get back to playing ball.

My issue with The Lip™ is his excessive complaining and making fun of people.

If he acts like a misbehaving 4th grader like he's been doing then he's going to have to sit in time-out for a while.

I think this can be misinterpreted. Methinks he was bored at work, and was trying to get people motivated to post again.

I shared the same sentiments expressed by the Lip regarding our organization after the epic Panda fail to have the annual awards ceremony after the Komie Compound had been booked.

Well I didn't like his attitude so I sent him to ban-town.

The Lip™ will have to phone-in his comments to other pandas for them to post here.

The lip hasn't contacted me about this but I don't think he should be banned for whatever he did (I don't know the story if there is one). As chief mentioned he is one of the few Riata residents and is especially one who is actually active with Riata management. I don't think we will have a problem playing so long as we stay slightly civilized. My final reason is entirely selfish in that I have been playing a lot of sand and I think my swing has gotten stronger and can't wait to try it out on his face and if banning makes that more difficult then its a bad thing.

It's not like banning the Lip's web presence is going to stop him from lipping once the season commences--the ancient art of Kanly has not been forgotten (sorry, that's my addition).

The website banning, for whatever reason, will hurt attempts to coordinate game. Besides me, and occasional Jim Back efforts as substitute teacher, the Lip is the only one who has any experience running organized game. He has been able to post a pretty accurate head count of how many Riata denizens are available and when in the past. This is useful information that will no longer be available.

I'm not entirely sure the punishment fits in this case. His posting may have been juvenile, but it was not criminal, and I've seen worse flame wars go back and forth in years past without "the nuclear option" being employed. Hell, I've been part of such flame wars!!!

Further, the web etiquette and other verbal transgressions that appear to be at issue here should be balanced with the positive elements of the Defendant's character:

He has chipped in for bbq, pizzas, volleyballs, and the very website he has has been banned from. He shows up on time (which is more than most of us can say), and, most importantly, he has exhibited unflagging enthusiasm for the game. These facts should count for something

I certainly hope that tempers cool given enough time for contemplation.

Look at the results of the alleged transgression--people are focused on the website and using it again. Does the end justify the means? Should the accused be entitled to a jury trial before sentencing? Do we even have a clearly defined set of bylaws in place--not everyone is aware of all internet traditions, after all--we have enough trouble playing watervolleyball. Maybe these are topics worthy of discussion, but there has been very little so far.

Defendant Lip has cause for action based on countercharges of censorship and conduct unbecoming of a Panda of the Year, but I am advising him not to pursue these at this time.

The longer this goes on, the more divisive it is likely to be, and the ban could backfire by generating sympathy for the martyr. Remember the "free TJ" movement when he was banned from the Riata? Will "Free LJ" be this year's cause celebre'? Makes a nice slogan for a T shirt.

If someone is being a shithead, I've decided to ban them at my discretion. If the Lip wants his precious $5 he's contributed to this site he can have it back.

Unilateralism has been viewed unfavorably by many members of this league in years past.

I am now the recipient of the Lip's Daily Rant. I'm thinking he should start his own blog.

Removed from the particular context of this dispute, his continued protests revolve around a philosophical debate regarding freedom of speech, minority rights, the uses/misuses of internet communication, and the wielding of executive power that, in another venue, would likely echo the viewpoints often expressed by the operator of this website.

While I am glad to see a new emphasis on "seriousness" applied to this forum, I am concerned at the relish with which supreme executive power has been exercised in this case. One should keep in mind the little bromide about what happens absolutely to absolute power...

We've been subjected to the magic stylings of Soul Glo and Matt Sac and survived, so this too shall pass.
