You better believe it!
The 06 pre-season began early this year. We didn't have much choice--working off of conventional wisdom, if it hits 80 any day, we play. Sunday reported temp was 84. Not in the pool, though--VERY COLD.
A small group of intrepid souls, consisting of Creepy, Jesus, Mr. Tasty, and Speedo Chris, braved mind and body numbing conditions to do battle in 3 twos matchups.
The teams were Creepy-Jesus vs. Speedo-Tasty. The first two were close: 17-15 and 15-11, the third not so much (15-6). All went to Creepy-Jesus. In the last two games, my side got down early--6 points to nil in the first instance, and a 4 point deficit in the second--in the second game we just stayed down. There was a bit of a height advantage that was tough to overcome, serves were not quite as deadly as they could have been, and footwork, let alone effort, is very, very difficult to achieve in freezing conditions. But hey, what can you expect from the first games of the new season?
Despite the onset of hypothermia in the third game, it sure felt good to play ball again. Don't ask Pat, because he wouldn't know. He showed up to witness the insanity, but failed to join in our panda games. His nickname for this year should be Panties!
I look forward to writing another one of these in a couple of months. Fight! Fight! Fight!
