How do the pollution levels compare for running a diesel engine on vegetable oil vs. biodiesel?

Post subject:  vegetable oil vs biodiesel vs diesel emissions

Hi Creepy :)

i would much rather burn veggie oil than make biodiesel. you only have to filter it of particles and sometimes water. to make biodiesel you need to do more processing needing more time, money, equiptment, space for that, and nasty chemicals (sodium hydroxide - look up its MSDS, and methanol). of course, you can just buy biodiesel, which is convenient and costs $2.95/gallon.

Very good question - my initial findings of a single emissions test (only a single data point but it seems like they did some decent testing) shows that burning a particular oil (note that different oils will burn differently, and one can burn a variety of oils in a diesel engine) had good emissions results compared to diesel and too different biodiesel batches.

It actually had the same NOx emissions as the diesel, which is significant, because biodiesel typically has increased NOx emissions (5-10% more) than burning petrol diesel. In this respect this test showed significant benefit to burning the oil rather than the biodiesel.

It also had lower particulate counts (smoke) and CO than diesel and similar to biodiesel.

NOx contributes to forming ozone smog and can form particulates (smoke) which are an inhalation hazard.
